The Old Testament book of Ezekiel is quite possibly the most intimidating book of the Bible for Christian readers and it is largely unread and often misunderstood! This concise book has been written to help correct that!
This is not a chapter-by-chapter analysis, nor a verse-by-verse exegesis, but a topic-by-topic examination. The topics include ‘Ezekiel’s Life and Times’, to give us a flavour for the book; ‘Visions of God’, investigating what is revealed of deity; ‘Imagery and Symbolism’, looking at some of Ezekiel’s methodology; ‘Ezekiel’s Visions’, God’s ways of communicating with him; ‘Of Him Bare all the Prophets Witness’, seeing Christ in Ezekiel; ‘Judgement on Judah and Jerusalem’, and lessons for our own well-being; ‘Judgement on Neighbouring Nations’ - how to treat those suffering God’s judgements; ‘The Restoration of Israel’, a look at the future, glorious for Israel and for ourselves; ‘A Word to Shepherds’, current direction to those who assume leadership of God’s people; and ‘The LORD Is There’, an examination of the entities that will make up the millennium in Israel.
The book concludes with some bonus chapters by a variety of different authors, all related to the book of Ezekiel.

This informative work will trace the life of Ezekiel's prophetic calling which began at age 30 and lasted for 22 years. Within the book of Ezekiel, Author Ed Neely has done extensive research and brings a very easy clarity that will be understandable regardless of one's previous knowledge of this book. It lays a fantastic foundational knowledge that will unravel a lot of the symbolism used throughout the book of Ezekiel. Five years after entering the land in 593 B.C. Ezekiel's life as a prophet was characterized as demanding and unpopular. What makes this resource so valuable is that there are a lot of parallels for today in helping us understand the heart of God.The essence of the chapters can be divided into three main themes:
Chapter 1– 24 judgment of Judah
Chapter 25–32 judgment of Satan and the nations
Chapter 33–48 Judah's restoration
His ministry was the catalyst that caused Israel to be purged from their idolatry. In Ezekiel's vision, he saw impending judgment coming from Babylon. The population of Judah was not receptive no matter what the presentation. Ezekiel's vision will reveal God's distaste with idol worship, corruption, and violence. The four living creatures(chp.10) had four faces that illustrated the holiness of God. They fully demonstrate the attributes of the servant of God and of God himself. Beside the cherubs stood a wheel representing the omniscience of God. The wheels move with heavenly power representative of divine government. When God speaks, Neely states, that the movement of the wings of the cherubim cease.
This work brings an understanding that a Prophet's Life is often very difficult. Ezekiel had to lie on one side and then the other each day for over a year. Meager food consisted of 8 ounces of bread and water, prepared by himself on a fire of cows dung. Some of the symbolism used includes the sword which was symbolic of judgment, and hair removal which represented the cities destruction. Although fewer than a third of the population would survive, this book is not all gloom and doom. In fact, after chapter 9 where it depicts the destruction, there will later be a third vision which will reveal a future city and temple along with purified priesthood who will do all of God's will.
God demonstrates in chapter 16 that he still finds room in his heart for forgiveness based on repentance and atonement. Many perhaps are familiar with the vision of the valley of dry bones where it illustrates what God could and would do to Israel to restore their place in the future. Just like God speaks through his Prophet to the leaders of Israel, he also speaks to leaders today. In chapter 34 there is a warning to to the seriousness of those that serve as Pastors to others.
This is not a verse by verse Bible study but it is a great resource to use alongside your reading of the book of Ezekiel. Points can be used greatly to mark and highlight aspects in your Bible making the understanding and practical application come alive. I highly recommend this book and feel that even those greatly seasoned in the word of God will gain new understanding and practical application for today. This book created a hunger in me to read and reread passages that I have often glossed over before because of lack of clarity. I give this work five stars for the content, easy readability, and way in which this author brings clarity to all levels of maturity in Christ.
